This newsletter is to share common interests in wildlife and conservation. A central theme being a wish to demonstrate that while there are wonderful things to discover by travelling far into the wilderness, there are also a wealth of wild creatures and plants to be found right outside our doors and in our gardens – whether you live in a village, a suburb or the center of a city.

Posts may include mini-biographies of local species or discuss finding elusive plants and animals. I’m a wildlife gardener and I offer seasonal tips for attracting birds, bees, and butterflies. I advocate for GreenBirding and citizen science.

I’m a retired biologist living to the west of Montreal. These days I pursue wildlife biology projects and share my knowledge and enthusiasm with anyone, especially young people. I’m a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology and past-President of Bird Protection Quebec, Canada’s oldest bird focussed conservation charity.

Why subscribe?

This site is free, and will remain so. But by subscribing you will never miss an update or new article. Each new edition goes directly to your inbox, usually late morning on a Sunday. It’s safe too – this isn’t one of those social media sites (you know who) that gathers and sells your personal data. Privacy is baked in and you can opt out at any time.

You can subscribe to receive notice of future articles simply by entering your email address in the field below. As I said a couple of paragraphs previously, privacy is baked in and you can opt out at any time.

Note: I have been writing these articles since the summer of 2023 and publishing them on Substack (https://1001species.substack.com) where they continue to appear, usually a couple of times a week. I have started this “parallel” website because it is becoming evident that the people at Substack want me to start charging for subscriptions – after all, that’s what they are in business for – and their algorithms I have learned, are being tweaked to reduce the discoverability of free sites from which they make no money. If you subscribed to my Substack before the time this site was launched at the end of 2025, then you will continue to see posts there as I write them. If you have found this site and want to see more then you can subscribe here, or at Substack, or even both. It’s all free either way
